Self care tips for Winter Solstice according to Chinese Medicine

As the winter rain settles in on the shortest day of the year, tap into the ancient wisdom of Chinese Medicine to nourish your body and practice self care this Winter Solstice.  Here are some rituals, advice, and recommendations to thrive in harmony with the darker, cooler yin season:

1. Keep your feet warm with cozy socks and warming ginger foot Soaks:

In Chinese Medicine winter is all about the kidneys and the kidney channel starts at the bottom of your feet so keeping your feet warm is essential for proper body warmth metabolism and adrenal health. Treat yourself to a soothing foot soak infused with ginger and sea salt. This practice not only warms your extremities but also enhances overall circulation, grounding you in the present moment.

2.  Eat Kidney/Adrenal nourishing and warming foods:

black sesame butter, chestnuts, walnuts, black beans, bone broth, congees and salty kidney nourishing soups filled with root  vegetables, immune boosting mushrooms, and warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves.

3. Embrace Rest:

Winter Solstice invites us to turn inward and rest. Ensure you get sufficient sleep to recharge your body and mind, allowing for optimal rejuvenation.

4. Reflection, meditation and yin yoga:

Take this time to reflect on the past year, expressing gratitude for growth and setting intentions for the coming season of renewal. Yin yoga helps use embrace stillness while moving and rebalancing energy

5. Rebalance with acupuncture or acupressure:

Acupuncture helps rebalance the body during seasonal transitions. The acupuncture point Kidney 1 is especially beneficial at Winter Solstice as it is the first point on the kidney channel as it brings relaxation, grounding and stress relief. This point is located on the sole of your foot, right at the center of the pad, between the second and third metatarsal bones. It's essentially where the ball of your foot meets the arch. Massage this point for 1-2 minutes on each foot for the ultimate relaxing winter solstice experience

Remember, Winter Solstice is a time for reflection, restoration, and connection with the natural rhythms of life. Let's embrace the season with gratitude and mindfulness.
